The 2018-P and 2018-D Kennedy half dollars were made in an Uncirculated finish and were available for collectors to buy directly from the United States Mint’s website. These coins went on sale starting March 20, 2018, at noon Eastern Time (ET).
In this article, when you buy the two-roll set, you’ll get two rolls of coins, each containing 20 coins (worth $10 each). These coins come in special U.S. Mint paper wrappers that say “2018 Kennedy Half Dollar $10.” One roll has a “P” on it, showing it was made in Philadelphia, while the other has a “D,” indicating it was made in Denver. If you get a bag instead, it will be labeled “United States Mint” and “Kennedy Half Dollars” and will contain 2018 half dollars from both the Philadelphia and Denver Mints.
Market Data and Noteworthy Specimens
After a flurry of sales in 2018 and 2019, the market for top-quality Kennedy half dollars on eBay has slowed down. As of February 2024, regular, ungraded coins are selling for about $2 each. However, some unopened bags and rolls of these coins are still being traded.
For example, a two-roll set of 2018-P and 2018-D Kennedy half dollars sold for $45 on February 18, 2023. On February 2, another set in an unopened box sold for $55. In another sale, Colorado Springs coin dealer Tom Hallenbeck sold a similar two-roll set for $58.51 on May 2, 2023.
The highest price recorded for an online auction of the 2018-D Kennedy Half Dollar was $433.12. This was for a coin graded NGC MS68PL, sold by GreatCollections on June 5, 2022. As of August 19, 2024, NGC reports that nine coins have been graded as PL at MS68.
In terms of the top population, PCGS has 66 coins graded at MS67 (as of August 2024), NGC has 33 coins at MS68, and CAC has not graded any coins.
